Mookaite is a fossil-rich sedimentary stone known as Windalia Radiolarite, found exclusively near the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia. Its striking red and yellow colors come from ancient deep-sea mud composed of opaline silica remains from microscopic organisms called Radiolaria. As time passed, these ocean sediments were uplifted onto land and gradually hardened into rock through silica deposited by warm groundwater. The name Mookaite comes from the Aboriginal word mooka, meaning “running waters,” a reference to the freshwater springs that supply Mooka Creek, where the stone is sourced.
It is also referred to as the Rain Maker stone.
